Colonel Quaritch, V.C.: A Tale of Country Part 1

Colonel Harold Quaritch returns from military service to Honham Cottage and begins a new life while reflecting on his past and on Ida de la Molle, the woman who still haunts his memory. He meets the local squire and learns of the declining fortunes of the de la Molle family, becoming entangled in financial troubles involving Lawyer Quest and the ambitious Edward Cossey. Debts and inheritance issues cast a shadow over the estate, while social gatherings such as the tennis party conceal tensions beneath their polite surface. Ida considers a personal sacrifice to save her family, and Cossey’s possessive ambitions intensify the conflict. Though outwardly reserved, Quaritch is already drawn into a struggle between love, honor, and the fading prestige of the landed class.
