There is a particular kind of loneliness that belongs only to those who have made the world laugh at them on purpose.
Eustace Lane chose his mask early. At Eton, where boys sharpen themselves against one another like blades, he discovered that eccentricity could be a kind of armor — that if he made himself ridiculous before anyone else could, he controlled the terms of his own humiliation. It was a transaction, and for a time, it paid well. London society adored him for it. They invited him to their dinners, quoted his absurdities, and rewarded his performance with exactly the notoriety he had craved.
But notoriety is a cold companion.
Hichens traces Eustace's ascent through the drawing rooms of the city with a sharp and sympathetic eye, never letting the reader forget that beneath the buffoonery lives a man of genuine feeling — a man capable of love, and therefore capable of ruin. It is Winifred Ames who undoes him, not through cruelty but through the far more dangerous act of seeing him clearly. In her presence, the performance falters. The mask slips. Some men deliberately don a character in early youth as others don a mask before going to an opera ball. They select it not without some care, being guided in their choice by the opinion they have formed of the world’s mind and manner of proceeding. In the privacy of the dressing-room, the candles being lighted and the mirror adjusted at the best angle for a view of self, they assume their character, and peacock to their reflection, meditating: Does it become me? Will it be generally liked? Will it advance me towards my heart’s desire? Then they catch up their cloak, twist the mirror back to its usual position, puff out the candles, and steal forth into their career, shutting the door gently behind them.
