This work Great Catherine by George Bernard Shaw is set in the Russian court where a British officer Charles Edstaston and his fiancée Claire encounter Catherine the Great amid intrigues orchestrated by Grigory Potemkin. The rigid and formal Edstaston finds his beliefs challenged by Catherine’s bold and direct personality creating a clash of values. At the same time Catherine gains new insights into human nature power and desire through their interaction. Through humor and satire the play explores cultural contrasts and raises questions about authority morality and individual freedom.
