Leonard Charteris advocates free love while becoming entangled with multiple women especially Grace Tranfield and Julia Craven as their relationships generate conflict and emotional tension within the progressive setting of London’s Ibsen Club where conventional ideas about marriage and morality are constantly challenged and as jealousy pride and desire shape the characters’ choices the play exposes human selfishness and social hypocrisy and through its alternative endings Shaw ultimately questions the stability of traditional views on love and marriage with sharp satire.
