Part 1 begins with the missionary Thomas Gowles, whose absolute confidence in his own beliefs leads him to mistake an isolated community for ignorant savages and to impose his religion and civilization upon them, ultimately helping to destroy the last surviving remnant of ancient Greek culture. The following tale sends a deceased agnostic through paradises belonging to religions other than his own, humorously questioning whether any imagined heaven can satisfy everyone and exposing the contradictions of religious certainty. A later adventure involving a slave auction, a human map, and a buried treasure reveals the cruelty of treating people as property while satirizing greed, collecting, and the desire for wealth.
