Lightning Jo, the Terror of the Santa Fe Trail: A Tale of the Present Day Part 2

After burying the dead and placing the women and children in wagons, the rescuers leave Dead Man’s Gulch for Fort Adams, but another Comanche attack in a dangerous canyon scatters the travelers and causes Lizzie Manning to disappear. Lightning Jo and Egbert connect her disappearance with the mysterious figure known as the Terror of the Prairie and follow campfires, tracks, abandoned horses, and other faint clues into the rugged hills where the Comanches are hiding. Held captive by Swico-Cheque, Lizzie refuses to surrender to fear and waits for an opportunity to escape, while Lightning Jo and Egbert endure gunfire, entrapment, steep cliffs, and a relentless pursuit as they close upon the enemy camp. Egbert kills Swico-Cheque during the final confrontation and rescues Lizzie, and after the wounded Lightning Jo returns safely to the fort, the Terror of the Prairie is revealed as Swico-Cheque’s disguise and Lizzie and Egbert are later married.
