Fred confirms that Bud’s full name is Nathaniel Higgens Heyland and that its initials match those engraved on the knife found after the burglary, while his secret observation of Bud and the supposed cattle dealer Cyrus Sutton convinces him that they are discussing the stolen property and further crimes. Continuing his investigation, Fred discovers the missing silverware hidden inside an old tree and moves it to safety, but he is astonished to learn that Cyrus Sutton is actually James Carter, a New York detective who has gained Bud’s confidence while investigating a wider counterfeiting operation. Carter and the village constable Archie Jackson arrest Bud and circus employee Jacob Kincade at the hiding place, and although the prisoners briefly attempt to escape, they are recaptured and the full truth about the robbery and counterfeit-money scheme is revealed. Fred returns the silverware to the grateful Perkinpine sisters, uses his reward to clear the debt on his mother’s home, and later grows into a successful man whose honesty, courage, industry, and devotion to his mother remain the foundations of his life.
