While crossing Lake Geneva, Baron Melchior de Willading, his daughter Adelheid, and their companions are caught in a dangerous storm and owe much of their survival to the courage of the young soldier Sigismund and the mysterious Italian adventurer Maso. Adelheid and Sigismund grow increasingly attached, but the social conventions surrounding rank and ancestry threaten their hopes until Sigismund finally reveals that he is the son of Balthazar, the despised hereditary headsman. Though shaken by the revelation, Adelheid refuses to judge him solely by his birth, establishing the novel's central conflict between individual merit and inherited social prejudice.
