At Oyster Pond on Long Island, the avaricious Deacon Pratt obtains secret information from a dying sailor about a rich sealing ground and buried treasure in distant southern waters, then places the schooner Sea Lion under the command of young Roswell Gardiner. Roswell and Pratt's niece Mary deeply care for one another, but their differing religious beliefs remain an obstacle, while Captain Daggett and the Martha's Vineyard men prepare a rival Sea Lion after learning part of the secret. The two schooners leave America and head south through storms and rivalry, beginning a dangerous contest for seals, wealth, and the hidden destinations described by the dead sailor.
