Retired British officer Hugh Willoughby establishes the isolated Hutted Knoll in the New York wilderness, where he lives with his wife, his son Robert, his daughter Beulah, and his adopted daughter Maud, while the Tuscarora known as Saucy Nick maintains a long and uneasy connection with the household. As the American Revolution begins, Beulah's husband Evert Beekman supports the American cause while Robert remains a British officer, placing the family between opposing loyalties. Maud struggles privately with her feelings for Robert because she knows they are not truly brother and sister, while the resentment and ambition of overseer Joel Strides add another threat to the increasingly fragile peace of the settlement.
