Grace loves Henry but refuses his proposal because she fears that her father’s disgrace would burden his family, and she returns to Hogglestock while Henry remains determined not to give her up. Crawley’s relative and lawyer, Mr Toogood, takes up the case and begins tracing the mysterious cheque, searching for evidence that can explain what Crawley’s confused memory cannot. Meanwhile in London, Clara Van Siever and Conway Dalrymple grow closer as the financial troubles of Dobbs Broughton and the Van Siever family expose another world shaped by money and social calculation. Crawley continues to believe in his innocence without being able to prove it, while Toogood’s investigation gradually offers the first real hope of discovering the truth.
