The Redskins; or, Indian and Injin concludes James Fenimore Cooper’s Littlepage Manuscripts trilogy and uses New York’s Anti-Rent movement to explore conflicts over property rights, contractual obligations, social class, political influence, and competing ideas of liberty. While staying in Europe, the young landowner Hugh Roger Littlepage and his uncle Ro learn in Paris that tenants at home are refusing rents and that organized protesters, some disguised as “Indians,” are resisting legal authority, prompting them to return to America and investigate the condition of their family estates for themselves. As they prepare for and undertake their journey home, it becomes clear that the Anti-Rent agitation has grown beyond a dispute over particular leases into a wider struggle involving politics, public opinion, law, and changing attitudes toward ownership, setting the stage for Cooper’s examination of the tension between individual rights and social responsibility.
