Set in the Neutral Ground of the American Revolution in 1780, the story begins when the mysterious Mr. Harper and the peddler Harvey Birch appear at the Wharton home, while British officer Henry Wharton secretly visits his family in disguise and is captured by Continental officer Peyton Dunwoodie, forcing personal loyalties and wartime duty into direct conflict. Henry briefly escapes during a skirmish but is recaptured, Dunwoodie struggles between his love for Frances Wharton and his obligations as a soldier, and Birch is repeatedly hunted as a suspected British spy while refusing to reveal the true purpose behind his dangerous movements between the opposing armies. Amid battles, pursuits, robbery, and destruction, Birch falls into the hands of the lawless Skinners and later the Continental troops, deepening the central uncertainty over who is truly serving the American cause and who is merely exploiting the chaos of war for personal gain.
