Tarzan repeatedly rescues Jane and her companions from the dangers of the jungle and falls deeply in love with her, while his rescue of the French officer D’Arnot gives him a friend who teaches him French and the customs of civilized society and helps him understand more clearly that he belongs to the human world. Through the diary left by his parents and the comparison of fingerprints, D’Arnot establishes that Tarzan is actually the lost son of Lord Greystoke and the rightful heir to the title, after which Tarzan recovers Professor Porter’s stolen treasure and follows Jane to America. Reunited with her, he learns that family debts have pressured Jane toward an unwanted marriage and removes that obstacle, yet when he believes she has chosen Clayton he keeps silent about his own birthright and steps aside for her happiness, ending the novel with his identity discovered but his future between the jungle and civilization still unresolved.
