Returning to Africa, Tarzan embraces jungle life once more, fights ivory raiders, earns the loyalty of the Waziri and becomes their white chief, then discovers the legendary city of Opar, where he encounters the priestess La and survives deadly rituals while uncovering immense hidden treasure. Meanwhile the survivors of the wrecked Lady Alice are cast into the wilderness, placing Jane in grave danger, and Tarzan leads his Waziri allies through the forest and back toward Opar in a series of rescues, battles, and pursuits that finally reunite him with her. After Clayton’s death removes the final barrier between them, Tarzan and Jane are at last united, bringing the novel to a close as Tarzan accepts both his love and the dual identity that binds him to civilization and the jungle.
