Seeking to recover from serious financial losses, Tarzan returns to Opar for another portion of its hidden treasure, but his expedition becomes entangled with the schemes of the treacherous Belgian Albert Werper and the Arab raider Achmet Zek, while an earthquake leaves Tarzan injured and stripped of his memory. La, the high priestess of Opar, still torn between resentment and her feelings for the man who rejected her, seeks vengeance, while Werper steals the jewels Tarzan has recovered and Jane is carried away during Achmet Zek’s attack, setting several desperate pursuits in motion at once. Reduced by amnesia to an instinctive jungle existence, Tarzan struggles to survive without knowing his own identity as La and the priests of Opar close in on him and the fates of Tarzan, Jane, Werper, and the stolen treasure become increasingly intertwined.
