Condemned to torture and death at Opar, Tarzan gains another chance at survival when La’s lingering feelings overcome her desire for revenge, while Werper flees with the stolen jewels and Jane passes through a succession of captors and dangers as competing enemies struggle for both treasure and power. Still without his full memory, Tarzan once again leads the Mangani and instinctively fights to protect Jane, surviving repeated battles and pursuits as she too struggles through the jungle, escapes from captivity, and is seized again by those who hope to exploit her. Tarzan finally regains his reason and identity, rescues Jane, and returns home with her, while the conflicts surrounding Werper and the jewels are resolved and the story closes by restoring the bond between love, civilization, and the wild world that had temporarily been lost.
