While Tarzan struggles through the Temple of the Gryf and the political conflict surrounding A-lur, Jane becomes a central figure in the rivalry between priestly and royal factions, and Tarzan crosses lion pits, secret passages, and hostile cities as he repeatedly searches for and attempts to rescue her. Jane is captured again and Tarzan himself comes close to death, but the aid of allies such as Pan-at-lee, Om-at, and Ja-don, together with Tarzan’s own jungle skill, gradually turns the struggle in their favor until Korak unexpectedly arrives and helps reunite the long-separated family. With the power of Lu-don and Mo-sar broken and Ja-don proclaimed king, Tarzan, Jane, and Korak finally leave Pal-ul-don, crossing the dangerous marshes on the back of a gigantic gryf before beginning the long journey home.
