Julian escapes the Kalkar city and returns with Nah-ee-lah to Laythe, where the struggle against the ambitious Ko-tah and the treacherous Orthis erupts into open war, while Nah-ee-lah is proclaimed ruler and Julian’s conflict with his former companion grows into a threat far beyond the Moon. Orthis eventually allies himself with the Kalkars and enables their conquest of Earth, and although he and Julian 5th perish together in a final confrontation, human civilization has already fallen beneath Kalkar domination. Generations later, Julian 8th and his family preserve the memory of the old American flag and freedom under brutal occupation, but growing resistance brings him into direct conflict with the authorities and ends with his arrest.
