When Stellara is carried away against her will, Tanar sets out in pursuit, but new enemies, uneasy alliances, misunderstandings, and betrayals eventually bring them into the hands of the Korsars and deep inside their great city and palace. Enduring imprisonment, darkness, violence, and seemingly impossible obstacles, Tanar finds Stellara again and uses a daring disguise and his own ingenuity to escape the palace with her and make for the sea. The story closes with David Innes still imprisoned beneath the palace of the Cid of Korsar, prompting Jason Gridley on the outer world to resolve that he himself will journey to Pellucidar and rescue him.
