Tarzan raises the orphaned golden lion Jad-bal-ja into a powerful and loyal companion, but when his fortune is depleted he prepares to return to Opar for treasure, unaware that his former servant Flora Hawkes has stolen a copy of his map and organized a rival expedition with the Tarzan look-alike Esteban Miranda. While pursuing the conspirators, Tarzan is drugged, betrayed, and ultimately captured by the people of Opar, where he faces sacrifice as greed and deception also begin tearing Flora’s expedition apart. La once again intervenes to save Tarzan, but after losing the support of her own people she is forced to flee with him toward a mysterious region from which travelers are said never to return.
