Phineas strengthens his political position by securing the seat for Loughton and increasingly aligns himself with Monk’s reforming principles, but while his public career advances he watches Laura’s marriage to the austere Kennedy deteriorate and becomes deeply attracted to the independent and beautiful Violet Effingham, whose longtime suitor Lord Chiltern regards Phineas as a dangerous rival, and the conflict between the two former friends eventually erupts into a duel from which Phineas emerges alive and soon afterward politically promoted, while his growing social importance also brings him into close friendship with the wealthy and intelligent widow Madame Max Goesler and Violet remains surrounded by competing suitors, leaving Phineas more successful than ever in politics but increasingly entangled in uncertain relationships.
