With Laura’s assistance Phineas obtains an opportunity to meet Violet alone and formally asks her to become his wife, but Violet refuses him while her unresolved attachment to Lord Chiltern remains stronger than Phineas understands, and although this romantic disappointment hurts him his political career continues to advance as he gains government office and increasing influence, while Laura’s marriage to Kennedy deteriorates under his rigid possessiveness until their domestic life approaches complete breakdown and she again turns emotionally toward Phineas as one of the few people she trusts, while Madame Max Goesler attracts the aging Duke of Omnium yet carefully protects her independence and reputation and remains an important confidante to Phineas, whose outward political success increasingly contrasts with the unresolved conflicts of love, friendship, and loyalty in his private life.
